Which hash should I use?

SHA-256 when the vendor offers it. MD5 and SHA-1 are still common but can be forged by a determined attacker.

The hashes do not match. What now?

Download again from the official site, check you have the right version, and compare once more. If it still differs, report it to the vendor and do not run the file.

Did the download arrive unchanged?

Software vendors publish a checksum next to each download. If the hash you compute matches, the file is exactly what they published. If not, do not install it.
