Soil-moisture-aware irrigation scheduler for small plots

AGR-03 · Original hackathon problem statement from Arventiq Labs

The problem

Over-irrigation wastes water and power while under-irrigation cuts yield. Small plots cannot justify expensive commercial controllers.

What to build

Design a low-cost controller that reads soil moisture sensors, checks the weather forecast and switches a pump on a schedule that saves water without hurting the crop.

Success looks like

Demonstrate at least 25% water saving versus a fixed timer on a test plot, with remote override from a basic phone.

Suggested technologies

  • ESP32
  • Soil moisture sensors
  • MQTT
  • Weather API
  • Rule-based control
